Time’s like ice cream

Imagine walking into an ice cream shop on a warm and sunny day, the shop is cool and inviting. You stare at the menu for a couple of minutes and finally decide which one you want to order. You place your order, make the payment and get the delicious ice cream that you have been drooling over for a few minutes. Finally, the sweet and creamy taste hits you in the first bite.

Then as you walk outside, you realise it is extremely hot and your deciduousness starts to melt in your hand, but you shift yourself into gear and eat the ice cream before it can melt and disappear forever. Better in your stomach than on the side walk.  You can’t store it in the freezer because by the time you get to your freezer there won’t be anything left to freeze.

But the feeling lingers in your mouth and throat, sweet, creamy taste and the cooling effects lasting for a few minutes. You feel happy, content even, because ice cream makes everyone happy.

And as the quote states so clearly “Time is like ice cream enjoy it before it melts.”

We always use the excuse, “I don’t have enough time”, “I don’t have time to play around with my hobbies”, “I don’t have time to exercise”. Well, I have come to realise that it is not the time that is the issue but rather the priorities that we choose.

If I prioritise work only, my household falls apart. If I focus on my household only, my work falls apart. When I focus on myself, everything else goes up in flames. That is why I like routine and schedules. Which of the things are more important and which things has to be done. And how would I spend my time wisely, to make sure I have enough time to eat my ice cream too.

I read somewhere that when you have a big task at hand, start by spending 5 minutes on this task, and sooner or later you will find yourself sitting back, drinking the well deserved glass of wine and the task long forgotten. This is just my way of saying – get up, fold the laundry, clean the house, cook dinner and then sit down on the couch, while drinking water and watching whatever everyone else is watching, cartoons or sport.

Not my idea of fun but also why I spend my time running – sometimes running away from my own thoughts to clear my head, and also reading before I go to bed. This is my “ice cream eating time”.

But do the fun stuff too, hug the friend, smell the flowers and stop scrolling through random people’s vacation photos on Instagram. Don’t store the fun stuff for later do it now and start having fun now. It might not be in the form of a vacation but maybe it is just taking 5 minutes to breathe in complete silence.

Time waits for no one and time is precious. Enjoy the time you have in every day, don’t wait for “one day”. It might be too late.
