Missing socks and blessings

With summer in the air, sunshine and blue skies, we don’t wear too many socks. But then we end up with rain for days on end and we wear socks. And by doing the laundry, I lost some more socks. I have no idea how or where they went, I have searched and even asked the dog. He loves to steal them, sneaks them outside and plays with them, as if they were his toys or trophies.

To him, these socks are his blessings, and when you try to get them back, he picks them up and speeds through the garden like he is a Nascar racer. He zooms across the grass, jumps over obstacles and even zooms through the front door and out through the back door again. Chasing him is the most tiring task and he is smart. When you get too close, he zips past and hides in the bushes in the garden. And then sneaks out the other side when you try to get to him.

He loves this and I think if he could talk, he would probably say something like “Oh! Yay! I love playing chase the dog! Catch me if you can slow poke!” He does the same with my son’s toys and he loves playing with small bouncy balls.

Bouncy balls are another blessing for him. He gets super excited when he finds one in the house or garden, or when we bring home a new one. He doesn’t care about the colour, as long as they bounce. He will take this little ball in his mouth, jump onto a couch or bed and drop it. As the ball bounces, he will jump down and catch it again, and repeat the process. He doesn’t chew them, he just play with them.

Life is better when you focus on what is working, like my dog, he found a way to play with a bouncy ball alone. He also found a way to steal socks and sneak them outside. For me, it is a blessing when I don’t loose any socks in the washing. Or when the training program starts working out and showing results.

Some mornings I spill my coffee, by accident of course. Maybe on the table, maybe on my desk and sometimes even on my shirt. This is annoying but I count the blessings when I do not spill any coffee on myself or any flat surface for that matter.

We have a new bird in our neighbourhood. A red-chested cuckoo. Some mornings his call is sweet and wonderful to wake up too, a blessing too, since it is a reminder of the bush. BUT when he sits in a tree near out house and start calling his wife, I want to lose my mind. He calls on repeat. And boy does he have a set of lungs on him. The dogs bark at him, waking everyone and everything while I still want to sleep at 5am.

Never a dull moment but surely we are blessed with all the wonderful little creatures and creepy crawlies. Each with their own little personalities and their own little ways of going about their day. So instead of focussing on your missing socks or lack of sleep today, see all the small little things as blessings. There will be more things to be grateful for than being annoyed by.
