Talk less, sparkle more.

Ever wondered what the world would be like without communication? For starters it would be difficult. It would be boring and it will surely be quiet. Imagine we didn’t have languages to communicate with each other, we would have no idea what is happening in the world or even in our lives.

What happens when you don’t communicate or talk to friends? You lose contact. What happens if you don’t discuss dinner ideas with your partner? You would go hungry or be forced to eat things you don’t like or want…

But turn it around and we have seven thousand languages in the world (and we still can’t decide on what’s for dinner). We share thoughts, ideas, plans, dreams and hopes. We call, meet and laugh with or at each other. Sounds like the perfect world that we live in.

But sometimes we talk so much, we use up all the glitter before the party starts. We share everything without thinking and we spill the beans on the latest gossip or developments in our lives and maybe, we are left with nothing more to say.

Sometimes we have to be quiet. To reflect. To think. To listen more than we say. Sometimes we have to appreciate the silence and the space to clear your mind and regroup your thoughts. Sometimes we need the quiet moments in life to listen to the birds and appreciate the, once again, small things.

I have a daily visitor in my kitchen, a beautiful grey and orange robin. It sits on the wall at first, observing, when the door is open, he invites himself in and takes little scraps of food, bread crumbs, rice or even left over cereal. And then he goes outside and screams at the top of his lungs! “I GOT FOOD!” Well, I don’t speak bird so maybe that’s not it. It’s a magical mystery.

It reminds me that even the smallest of birds can make the biggest noise. Sometimes the people who stay quiet and listen are the ones we need to look out for, they might make the biggest difference. Being quiet doesn’t mean you’re boring, it means you’re saving your sparkle for the right moment. Sometimes you don’t have to make the “bad joke” because it sounds funny in your head and then end up explaining it, the joke loses its power.

Being quiet can be a storm brewing, it can be reflection on what went wrong, it can be making important decisions, it can mean that you want to be left alone to fall into your own rabbit hole. But being quiet can also be reserving the best information for the right moment, being mysterious or observant or even preparing for the next part of your life.

But the question remains, when is the right moment to sparkle?
