Who Decides What’s Polite?
Have you ever walked away from a conversation, paused, and suddenly thought: Was that actually okay?
Sometimes we say something in the heat of the moment, only to realize later how harsh it sounded. Or we watch a movie, see someone do something that feels completely rude or unacceptable, and find ourselves thinking about it for days afterward—trying to figure out where that line is actually drawn.
In all honesty, who actually decided what counts as polite and what gets labeled as rude? Who made these rules, and why was there never a master copy written down for the rest of us to read?
It can feel a bit like those old-fashioned finishing schools: sit like this, walk like that, don’t speak unless spoken to, and never say anything out of line. But who put those standards in place in the first place? And why are the most important rules of human interaction the ones nobody ever bothers to publish?
In Pineapple 32, we are diving headfirst into the unwritten rules of life. We will be exploring the subtle boundary between good manners and social absurdity, asking where these codes came from—and why nobody ever wrote them down in the first place.
Keep your tea manners handy, and join us next time as we question the rulebook!
