The Rules Between Us.

Have you ever stopped to evaluate the delicate, unspoken rulebooks we maintain between spouses, parents, children, and friends? In almost every relationship, there is a constant, quiet calculus running in the background: Who do I share this with? Who isn’t supposed to hear about that?

Sometimes, keeping track of it all creates a kind of inner turmoil. It feels like a tornado building up inside—until, inevitably, you let something slip to the wrong person, and you get slung right out of the funnel into orbit. Well, maybe not literally, but emotionally? It certainly feels that way.

Of course, every household has its visible, everyday rules. Wipe your feet. Take off your shoes. Put your plate and cup in the sink. That’s all completely normal. But what about the rules between us that nobody ever articulates out loud—the ones we just know?

Don’t leave your shoes right in the doorway because it will drive someone absolutely crazy. Don’t leave the shampoo lid open unless you want your husband to come rocketing out of the shower like a missile. (Though, to his credit, my husband knows me by now and has mostly made peace with my flaws. It’s fine. We survive!)

Still, it begs the question: What happens when I have rules, but nobody follows them? And what happens when they have rules, and I’m the one ignoring them?

I suppose it depends entirely on the situation. Take a classic household sequence: I ask you to clean up after yourself. Rule #1: Don’t leave a mess. You leave it anyway. I ask again. You ignore it again. I explode. Everyone looks around in shock, wondering why Mum is so upset! It’s the eternal circle of life: Make a mess ==> leave it ==> get asked to pack it away ==> ignore request ==> get shouted at ==> finally pack it away with a shattered ego while I stand there fuming. And somehow, despite all of that, we still have to make it to 10:00 AM without glaring each other to death over breakfast.

Over the past few weeks, as we’ve been exploring these unwritten rules of life—what’s polite, what’s strange, what’s familiar, and what’s unexpected—one thing has become abundantly clear: there is a vast gulf between our expectations and the expectations of others. There is my rulebook, their rulebook, school rules, work rules, and the rules of the universe.

And if there is one universal truth behind all of them? We all bend the rules to our own advantage whenever we can.

Grab your coffee (and remember to close the shampoo lid!), sit back, and welcome to Pineapple 34, where we dive headfirst into the rules of life.
