Nobody Told Me That!
By Janita Le Grange, Editor.
Have you ever walked into a room, looked around, and realized with absolute certainty: Nobody told me about this?
Maybe a vital memo left the building without stopping at your desk. Maybe a meeting took place that you were never invited to. Or maybe everyone simply assumed someone else had passed the information along. It happens all the time, and before you know it, you are left standing there trying to navigate the unexpected consequences of a conversation you never even knew took place.
I was watching a movie recently called Bride Hard—completely ridiculous, but thoroughly funny. The story follows a top secret agent who is trying to take a break from her high-stakes job to be the maid of honour at her best friend’s wedding. Naturally, she misses the bachelorette party because of a work mission, and then, right in the middle of the wedding weekend, a group of mercenaries crashes the venue to steal a fortune in gold hidden by the groom’s family.
She steps in, fights off the bad guys, saves the bride, and keeps the wedding on track. Afterward, the bride looks at her in utter disbelief and says, “You never told me you were a secret agent!”
Well… nobody told her! But then again, that is kind of the whole point of being secret, isn’t it?
It made me think about the information we hold onto, and the things people keep from us. Sometimes people keep secrets because we genuinely don’t need to know at that specific moment. Think about a surprise birthday party—it completely loses its magic the second someone spills the beans. The silence is necessary for the joy at the end.
Other times, people keep quiet because they assume the truth is already obvious, or simply because life moves too fast and details slip through the cracks. We spend so much of our time feeling out of the loop, wondering why we were left off the group chat, only to realize that most of the time, there was no master plan to exclude us—just a world full of people busy living their own chaotic days.
Whether it’s a secret mission, an unannounced meeting, or an empty carton of milk left in the fridge, life is full of moments where we are forced to improvise on the spot.
So grab your coffee—hopefully you still have milk!—settle into your favourite chair, and enjoy Issue 31 of The Pineapple: Nobody Told Me That!
