Just fly your kite

Windy chaos… something I am used to by now because things just never works out as planned. “What’s for dinner?”

“Let’s make beef stew! With vegies and rice.”

“Great idea!”

“We don’t have beef.”

“Chicken stew then?”

“No, I don’t feel like having chicken.”

And at the very moment we are lost because you don’t want to eat the food you actually have in the house. You don’t feel like making something else. And this mean we will “ching-chong-cha” our way through to who will be the lucky one to drive to the supermarket.

This is just an example that I think we all know too well.

I am going to start excising (because the doctor said I should) and because I want to run a 5km colour run. Great idea, I am amped and excited! I start running but every day is a guessing game with the weather. I end the week strong, rest over the weekend with plans to do a 4km run Monday and then – rain.

Plan B is to train indoors, in my home, doing squats, lunges, jumping jacks and spinning to nowhere on a stationary bike. All in robotic movements and pushing myself to finish because I do not like this.

A message from the school: “Please remember school will close at 13:00 for all students. Grade R, grade 1 and grade 2 will be leaving at 12:45”. Utter chaos at the school gates. Because 240 students use one gate to exit the school at the same time! No parking, queues are backed up almost into town, parents waiting in the rain for the kids to exit, and kids screaming so loudly and excitedly because school is out.

I drove around twice until I decided to stop and take a walk, in the rain, to the gate and wait. Then we make out way back to the car and wait again to leave the spot I chose, still backed up traffic. So we wait. Since arriving at school, trying to find a parking and leaving again took 30 minutes. By now I want to yell into the sky, for no reason in particular. Just annoyance.

School will close for the December holidays in 3 weeks. Which means, 3 weeks of chaos at school pickup in the afternoon. It reminds me of Scar in the Lion King, he said “Oh goody.” In a sarcastic manner, might I add?

I need to connect with my inner calmness and embrace this change for the next 3 weeks. And the channel my patience too. This is also not easy because many of these parents loose the cool when they don’t spot their child first, other walk into you because they are too busy on their phones to notice and then you have people complaining about the weather, about the rugby game, about having to get back to work and one woman mentioning her husband is “a walking flu virus”. Please mam, move away from me. I don’t want or need another flu virus this year!

But I am going to fly this kite like a boss, I am going to fly this kite like I have never crashed one and I am going to be positive, smiling and laughing at the sky at the end of this chaos. We will have a nice dinner – no matter what it is. We will arrive home, eventually, no matter how long it takes. I will be able to run the crazy off – whenever that might be.

And then I will laugh at the sky instead of yelling. Because sometimes we cannot control everything, but we can embrace it!
